While under the Trump Administration, becoming a U.S. citizen and simply living in America as an immigrant has become rather impossible. After concluding a nine month review, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released their final fee structure, which will begin to be enforced October 1st.
USCIS has raised Naturalization applications by 81%, going from $640 to $1,160. To apply in person is $10 more from an online application. Countless other applications for U.S. citizenship and employment have gone up drastically. Most likely the biggest price increase has been the application to suspend deportation (Form I-881) going up 535%, going from $285 to $1,810.
USCIS policy deputy director Joseph Edlow stated, “These overdue adjustments in fees are necessary to efficiently and fairly administer our nation’s lawful immigration system, secure the homeland and protect Americans.” USCIS claims this new fee structure is to meet a $1 billion dollar yearly shortfall (as they are mainly funded through these applications) all while demonizing immigrants as the Trump administration has continuously done.
While raising fees for becoming a legal immigrant, the Trump administration has also made it a point to fee asylum seekers. The US has now become the fourth country in the world to do this, along side Australia, Fiji, and Iran. Asylum seekers are immigrants who have fled their country to escape war or other harsh conditions in hope for protection. As if raising immigration fees drastically wasn’t enough for USCIS to meet their shortfall, they are now putting up fiscal blockades for those who seek safety.
It’s now almost impossible for low income immigrants to come to the U.S. and be an authorized citizen under the Trump administration. Asylum seekers who have lost all they have and are desperate for humane conditions flee to the U.S. for a second chance -- only to be bombarded with fees.
Even though USCIS has a current budget shortfall, this is an obvious barricade placed on immigrants -- specifically low income immigrants. Our current system intends to make immigrating to the US more difficult and expensive, even to those who desperately need to come here. They ask immigrants to come here legally yet seek for such unnecessary and overdone fees.
